Baby Sign Language (by Jenn)

I think that I am going to start teaching Cameron sign language. I have been reading up on it, and it seems like a good way to communicate for babies. He will be able to tell me when he is hungry, thirsty, tired, or even wet. My question was: "Why do they need to tell me when I usually already know those things?" Well, it just helps them to be able to communicate when they start getting older and can't tell you those things yet. Also, if you use the sign language the correct way, it can help your baby to start talking to you sooner. (The right way is making sure you say the thing you are signing every time so that the child constantly hears the words that go with the sign. If you don't say the word, they will solely rely on signing, and not have a need to speak.) Also, if you teach your baby enough signs, it is almost like they know a second language at a very early age and they will learn other signs a lot easier.

There are a few negatives though, so I am going to try and avoid those. Like what I said before. Some kids will rely on just signing. If you think this is happening, and your baby should be able to speak, you should quit signing and just talk.

I think I am going to try it. I would like for Cameron to learn sign language as a language. Being a teacher, I think that it would be really beneficial for him. Also, I had a friend in middle school who is deaf, and I think it was a rewarding experience being friends with her and learning the type of life she led at the time.

Thanks for the website recommendations. I have been reading up on signing with babies as well and we want to do it too. I work for the Head Start program and our teachers do it with the toddlers and it is amazing to see how much it helps.

My sister in-law taught Kendra some sign language when she was a baby and I think it worked pretty well. I know the sign for "more." I like to use it when I am drunk and want "more" wine.
I am nervous that Cameron will be smarter than me. I hope that when I babysit, he does not laugh at my idiocy. :)
